Dr David Pencheon

Dr David PencheonDavid Pencheon is a UK trained Public Health Doctor and is currently Director of the NHS Sustainable Development Unit (England) [NHS SDU].

The role of this unit is to help shape NHS policy nationally and locally, to spread the best evaluated practice on sustainable development, to promote an appropriate NHS response to climate change (both adaptation and mitigation), and to develop programmes of organisational and personal development in these areas for NHS organisations and employees.

He was previously Director of the NHS Eastern Region Public Health Observatory from 2001 to 2007, serving the East of England.

David Pencheon has worked as joint Director of Public Health, a Public Health Training Programme Director in the East of England, with the NHS R&D programme, and in China in the early 1990s with Save the Children Fund (UK).

His main interests and areas of research and publication are: sustainable development, climate change, underpinning local and national public health action and policy with good information and evidence, training and professional development, organisational development, medical informatics and decision support, and education in evidence based practice.

The NHS Sustainable Development Unit was established on April 1st 2008 by the Office of the SHAs in England. The roles of the unit are to:

  • to be a source of leadership, expertise and guidance concerning sustainable development to all NHS organisations in England.
  • raise awareness across the NHS as to the important responsibilities of, and actions for, the NHS regarding sustainable development and climate change. This includes promoting a culture of measurement and management which underpins carbon governance.
  • help shape NHS policy, locally, nationally and internationally that makes promoting sustainable development and adapting to and mitigating climate change as easy as possible for every NHS organisation.
  • ensure the very best practice and innovations on sustainability in the NHS and elsewhere are evaluated and costed and the mechanisms for implementation are made fully available to other NHS organisations.
  • work in partnership with the NHS, government, industry and the third sector to achieve the above.

The unit is run under the auspices of the Office of the SHAs (OSHA) on behalf of the SHA Chief Executives. It is hosted by the Strategic Health Authority in the East of England in Fulbourn, Cambridge. The Accountability of the Unit is through the CEO, Neil McKay and to the CEO of the NHS, David Nicholson.

End time: 8.45am

The Australasian Faculty of Public Health invites Fellows, trainees and guests who have an interest in the history of public health to participate in a guided walk through the Rocks and Darling Harbour in Sydney to discover some of the important sites related to the outbreaks of bubonic plague which occurred in Sydney between 1900 and 1920.  The walk will take approximately one and a half hours.

From here there is a short walk across the Pyrmont Bridge to the Sydney Convention & Exhibition Centre.  Dr Corbett will ensure the group will arrive at the doorstep of the Centre in time for the start of the Joint College Keynote Plenary.

Participants will be emailed a map of the route and a brief paper describing the history of plague in Sydney by the Congress Managers a week prior to Physicians Week.

For the tour, we recommend you wear comfortable shoes and to be prepared for wet whether.  Please arrive at the start location 15 minutes prior to the advertised start time.  The walk must start promptly at 7.15am.  There will be opportunities during the walk for a toilet break or to grab coffee/tea.
