The Physicians Week 2009 Organising  Committee would like to thank all participants involved in this year’s Congress, for helping to contribute to such a successful event. Physicians Week 2009 saw over 1,200 attendees, 50 exhibition stands and seven highly received programs –Adult Medicine/IMSANZ, Policy and Advocacy, Medical Education, Australasian Faculty of Rehabilitation Medicine, Australasian Faculty of Public Health Medicine, Australasian Faculty of Occupational & Environmental Medicine and Paediatrics & Child Health.

We would also like to thank all the delegates that took the time to complete the Congress evaluation form. We very much appreciate your comments.

We look forward to welcoming you to Melbourne in March 2010 for the World Congress of Internal Medicine in conjunction with Physicians Week for an exciting, educational event.

Award Presentations at Physicians Week 2009

The following awards were judged and presented at Physicians Week 2009.  The College congratulates all the winners listed below. 

We wish to thank all our award sponsors for their support, and special thanks go to the judges involved in the review and judging processes. 

Adult Medicine Division

RACP Trainee Research Award (Adult Medicine)
Dr Alan Moss for his study, Endoscopic Mucosal Resection (EMR) for Barrett’s High Grade Dysplasia (HGD) and early oesophageal adenocarcinoma with long term follow up: a two-centre Australian experience. 

Wiley-Blackwell Publishing Award for Clinical Excellence (The Best of Grand Rounds)
The judges believed that there were two outstanding presenters in this category but were unable to choose one of them as the winner.   It was therefore agreed that the Adult Medicine Division would match the Wiley-Blackwell sponsorship so that two awards of equal value could be presented.   The two winners were:
Dr Ashley Fong for her case presentation on Free Thyroxine (T4) and Freud – the ins and outs of thyroid function testing in psychiatric patients
and
Dr Katrin Sjoquist, whose case was titled Viva lost vagus – diagnosis in the age of Google

Best Poster Prize (Adult Medicine)
Dr Mark Lee for his poster titled Cortisol: ACTH ratio in the diagnosis of primary hypoadrenalism.

IMSANZ

Young Investigator Award
The judges believed that there were two outstanding presenters in this category but were unable to choose one of them as the winner. It was therefore agreed that this award would be given to two presenters:
Dr Paul Lee for his presentation Chronic beta-blocker therapy is associated with lower physical activity and obesity
and
Dr Sant-Rayn Singh Pasricha for his presentation Understanding anaemia amongst young children living in rural Karnataka, India.

RACP Trainee Research Award (Paediatrics & Child Health)
Dr Rachel Webb (NZ) for Population based echocardiographic screening for rheumatic heart disease in high-risk New Zealand children.  

Rue Wright Memorial Award
Dr Harriet Hiscock for A national snapshot of paediatric consultations: an Australian Paediatric Research Network Study.

PRSANZ Research Award
Dr Peter Vuillerman for Parent-initiated oral prednisolone for episodes of acute asthma in children aged 5-13 years.

Wiley-Blackwell Publishing New Investigator Award
Dr Nigel Orr for Frequency, aetiology and treatment of childhood end stage kidney disease in Australia and New Zealand. 

Best Poster Prize in Paediatrics & Child Health
Dr Jane Munro for Comfort kids program: improving procedural pain management by getting evidence into practice through organisational change – a 2 year evaluation of patients and staff. 

Australasian Faculty of Occupational & Environmental Medicine

Ramazzini Prize
Dr Grantley Tschirn for Long Term Lung Function Changes in Sulphuric Acid Mist Workers at a Zinc Smelter.

Australasian Faculty of Public Health Medicine

Gerry Murphy Prize
Catherine Bateman-Steele for Trauma, Mental Illness and Anger in East Timor: the East Timor Mental Health Epidemiological Needs Study – an assessment of mental illness incorporating indigenous indices of distress.

RACP Excellence in Mentoring Awards

The RACP Excellence in Mentoring Awards were established in 2007 to raise the profile of mentoring, encourage Fellows to volunteer to mentor their junior colleagues and demonstrate that mentoring is an activity the profession values. 

There were four categories of Mentoring Awards:  Academic and Research, Rural, Clinical and Professional Practice, and Humanitarian.  Fellows in all Divisions, Faculties and Chapters in both Australia and New Zealand were eligible for the Awards. 

The prize for each category consists of an RACP Congress package and award plaque.  Winners were invited to attend the Congress to receive their plaques.

The winners for 2009 are:

  • Academic and Research
  • Rural
  • Clinical and Professional Practice
  • Humanitarian

About Physicians Week

Physicians Week incorporates the annual RACP Congress which is the College’s largest annual event. Physicians Week was adopted to reflect the diversity of the College and its multi-discipline meeting.

Through participation in Physicians Week, the College’s Divisions, Faculties and Chapters, in partnership with the Specialty Societies will provide professional development and networking opportunities to Fellows and Trainees.

Fellows and Trainees from all specialties will be able to attend and interact with presentations from specialty areas that interest them, across the broad range offered by the College and its partners.

Environmentally Conscious

Physicians Week 2009 is an environmentally conscious event. In order to remain environmentally aware, the Congress Organisers and the Organising Committee are undertaking a number of steps in conjunction with the Sydney Convention and Exhibition Centre to ensure that where possible, green initiatives are used at the Congress. Physicians Week is classified as a Group Learning Activity as defined in the RACP MyCPD Program.
MyCPD participants may claim 1 credit per hour*.
MyCPD framework indicates that Group Learning Activity is limited to 50 credits per year.

*Excludes meal and exhibition breaks, and ancillary activities eg business meetings.

Internal Medicine Society of Australia and New Zealand (IMSANZ)
Established in 1997 the Internal Medicine Society of Australia and New Zealand (IMSANZ) represents the interests of specialist general internal medicine physicians throughout Australia and New Zealand. IMSANZ provides a focus for general physicians with a broad range of skills and experience to meet in a collaborative forum and maintain skills and knowledge essential to their chosen field of general internal medicine.

Accommodation Booking Deadline: 9 April 2009

A minimum one night’s deposit must be paid or credit card details given at time of booking to guarantee reservation. Bookings made after 9 April 2009 must be secured with credit card details.
